Personnel

Personnel:
The personnel of Sunnyside Unified School District have a mixed population. The population's demographic profile is 50% White, 20% African American, 20% Hispanic, 8% Asian, and 2% American Indian and Other. The Hispanic and Asian populations are growing at a much faster rate than the other racial groups. With this being said, a successful district will have well-rounded individuals whom are culturally diverse and professionally able to educate all students of all cultures. The educators will be very helpful and caring individuals that will be seen as an important role to future success by the students. This will also allow teachers to view their students and parents as important tools, giving students the told they need in order to be successful.  The positions that are valued at this district will be from administrative staff, to certified staff, as well as classified staff. All positions are important in order to create an environment where teaching and learning is a priority. The staff will help students, parents, as well as fellow co-workers to make this district successful.

Evaluation and Assessment

Evaluation and Assessment:
At Sunnyside Unified School District there is one main assessment that we have here for students, it is based off of data collection. There are monthly assessments that are done and recorded to show district the progress of the students as well as  having poster boards in the front of the class to show the student their own progress. There are 5 ranks there is Accelerated, Advanced, Proficient, Basic, and Limited. Each rank is specified by a color and charts are accessible to all staff member to see progress of all students in the core courses. Data is collected for Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. Teaching is monitored in many ways as well; there are numerous walk-throughs as well as evaluations that are given to the staff. The staff is also required to meet with his or her department to get feedback on the challenges they may encounter with everyday teaching.

Finances and Resources

  Finances and Resources:
The city of Sunnyside has several shopping centers and entertainment venues as well as a vibrant downtown center containing many locally-owned businesses. A once-thriving manufacturing plant recently announced significant employee layoffs, and may eventually shut down altogether. Therefore, leaving Sunnyside Unified School District in some worries regarding the revenue they will have available for the district. We currently have a Treasurer and a Business Manager who controls the fund and where they are allocated to. Other resources that are available is the state funding and the levy ballots. Some recruitment is not needed but during the levy all teachers,  some parents and students help in a levy walk in order to get information out on the importance of the levy passage.

Parents and Community

Parents and Community:
Parents and community of Sunnyside Unified School District is a huge reason why our district is so successful. Parents are very helpful and supportive at this district when it comes to a multitude of things. Parent teacher conference has a great turn out as well as PTO meeting, sporting events, and other fundraisers for the students. The community takes pride in its school district and traditionally supports levy and bond initiatives. Many Sunnyville residents were attracted to the community due to the outstanding reputation of its PK-12 schools as well as its higher education institutions. The two institutions have a very town and gown relationship with the district. The institutions allow seniors with a 3.5 or above to attend college classes for free. They get dual credit and when they graduate if they hold a certain gpa can be chosen for a scholarship to attend the universities.

My Realities

My Realities:

There are a multitude of things that stand in the way of my district to be successful. We have very little to no parent support unless it is basketball season. We also do not have very high enrollment and the students that are there do not take pride in their school. The building we are currently in is very old and needs to updates but of course with government funding going down there is no way these things can be taken care of. However, things have begun to turn around, we have personnel that actually care for our students, we have a new curricula and data collection is amazing. We are starting to see our students grow right before our eyes. With the dedication that the personnel has our school will look totally different in a few years. There are still that are resistant to the change but they will jump on board one they see the data driven results we are beginning to collect. The leadership that I am currently under is tremendously positive and motivated for the great things that will be coming out of our district. We are dedicated to teaching and learning. This blog activity has taught me how to begin construction on a district that has hope as well as challenges.
